Spring is just around the corner and typically a young man’s heart turns to passion! Only in Chloe things go a bit in reverse. Mid life crises abound in much of the population and married couple David and Catherine fit this trend. Liam Neeson (Taken) plays man of the house David, an intellectual professor while Julianne Moore (Hannibal) portrays Catherine, a doctor with a very suspicious mind. Long distance trips and missed connections prove troubling to the pair and Catherine decides to do a bit of investigative reporting of her own. Unlike famous scribes Bernstein and Woodward our Catherine believes her husband is cheating and enlists the help of a woman to either prove or disprove her theory. Enter Chloe, a vexing babe if there ever was one who manages to weave her way into this couple’s upscale life.
Hot and Bothered is Amanda Seyfried as a Not So Happy Hooker in Sophisticated Power Struggle
Up and comer Amanda Seyfried (Dear John) continues her winning ways as Chloe, a temptress who puts the value of a dollar above all else. Or does she? Complex and complicated Chloe is a case all unto herself and begins to create chaos for her employer Catherine who finds herself trapped in a dangerous web of deceit and seduction.
Hot and steamy, Chloe is a sexy thriller in the Fatal Attraction tradition, though not that graphic or gruesome. Suspicions abound everywhere in this well-crafted adult drama where director Atom Egoyan (Where the Truth Lies) keeps the tension going throughout its 96 minute course. Sexuality here is explored both in a physical and mental way with both Neeson and Moore terrific as two old lovers trying to figure out just where their relationship is going. Out to put a big dent in their “personal” lives is Chloe who under Ms. Seyfried’s interpretation leaves no stone unturned as the ultimate intruder who, though invited, has a habit of causing consternation among the entire family.
Frank Handling of Sexual Situations Sizzle in this Voyeuristic Charmer
Though not much is made out of Chloe’s past, which would have made this film more interesting, Egoyan does a good job fleshing out the careers of David and Catherine. We see how their work impacts their lives and thus how suspicions surface. Shot in Toronto you can tell these folks are well to do which may make dallying with others perhaps easier to conceal. Signs of the good life and trappings of wealth are apparent which may add to the ease of arranging all those extracurricular activities in both spirit and deed.
Infidelity can be sexy to some and dangerous for others and Chloe explores the whole range of emotions people caught up in extra marital affairs experience. Voyeurs will enjoy the sexual tension and romantic moments along with the tete a tete interludes sure to get hearts racing. Frank, adult dialogue that seems perfectly suited for those private moments in the bedroom lend more authenticity to this tale that touches on suspicions, morality, family values and the need to know the truth and experience the excitement of bodily warmth. Through it all Chloe will make an indelible impression on onlookers.
